也許是因為昨晚的貓空龍門會,聽了老師們的感慨,於是今天不斷想起Robert Frost的「The Road Not Taken」。老詩一首了,在美國的知名度應該如同李白的「舉頭望明月,低頭思故鄉」。國立編譯館也曾將其收入高中英語課本。當時年紀小,讀不出味道。然而此後每碰上一次抉擇,我總會想起這首詩,年紀愈長,讀起來愈有味道:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
兩條路在黃色的樹林間叉開,
可惜我不能走兩條路。
我這個過客久久徘徊,
極目望去,一條路在遠處,
蜿蜒地進入樹林荒蕪;
我向另一條路望去,同樣平坦,
也許它更值得行走,
因為它長滿茸茸綠草,等待人們的踐踏;
雖然它也已紛亂,
行人在這裡過往奔沓。
那天清晨,兩條路上覆滿樹葉,
沒有腳步把它們踏碎。
啊,哪一天我將走第一條路!
雖然我知道條條路相接,
我仍懷疑是否仍能走回原路。
我將把這事告訴別人,
一面深深嘆息。
樹林中有兩股岔道,
而我走的那條路行人稀少,

這首詩翻譯版本很多,我認為成寒翻譯的較其他人還有味道。不過啊,若就我一個很不專業的人來看,我寧願很沒翻譯道德地將最後一句話譯為「從此漸行漸遠」。中國文字是很有意思的。用漸行漸遠,除了表面上看是選了另一條路,愈走愈遠,另一方面,又可實喻與那一個沒被選擇的選擇差異日鉅。不過,還是讀原文更有況味。
